I have always loved going to the movies. Before my kids were born my partner and I had these cards for our Cineworld Cinema ( a huge chain in the UK) that allowed us to see as many movies we wanted for a monthly fee! But once the kids come along and the bills start to pile up and the rising price of movie tickets, going to see a movie is a pretty big event that costs a great deal of money. Especially when the kids start to want to go. But taking my kids to the movies is something I love to do! So I have learned to do it on a budget and here are a few tips so you can take your kids to the movies without having to take out a second mortgage on your house.
Take Your Own Snacks
The mark up on snacks at the movie theatre is just insane and what is even more insane is that people pay it! Yes on occasion I will get a popcorn, but the other snacks like candy, potato chips, hot dogs and whatever else is sometimes as much as four times the price you would pay in a normal store. We are lucky in that our local movie theatre is pretty much across the street from a large and cheap super market. So we go there and load up on snacks and save a ton of money in the process!
Look For Discount Days
Now this will clearly depend on where you live, but I always look to the best day to take my kids to the movie theatre. A prime example and a recent one I want to give you is the Guardians Of The Galaxy movie. My boys wanted to see this so bad and in 3D no less. So rather than just plumping down the money for four full price movie tickets on a Saturday, we went on a Tuesday evening which is when our movie theatre has cheap tickets!
See Old Movies
Sometimes kids just love the magic of going to the movies and they do not really care about what they are going to see. One thing that many movie theatres do is they will cater especially for kids by playing older movies usually on a Saturday and Sunday morning and they will be very cheap to go and see. This is well worth doing if you want a cheap day out at the movies or if you want to see if your child would sit and watch a whole movie in the theatre.
Ask About Loyalty Bonuses
I have a few movie theaters that I could go to in my local area, but we always go to the same one. The main reason is that they have a bonus card that gets swiped each time we go and see a movie, even if it’s on the cheap days or one of the cheap kids movies. You get points that all add up and can be used for things like free snacks and best of all money of your tickets! So look into if your movie theater has some kind of bonus card, most of the time they will be free or at most there will be a small charge.
