One of the best ways to get in shape and help you improve your fitness is by working your core. Your core muscles are actually pretty much used in all forms of physical activity from your day to day life to if you play any sport. Your core muscles are your abs, lower to mid back muscles and your hip muscles. Of course it goes deeper than that, but the easiest way to think of your core is these three sections. Today we are looking at a few ways to help you strengthen your core and help you reach your fitness goals. These are basic exercises, but they will help you get started.
Exercise To Strengthen Core : Sit Ups
Pretty much everyone in the world knows the basics of doing a sit up. But its doing the exercise properly that is going to help strengthen your core best. There are many ways to do sit ups, but to really push yourself try doing them like this. Lay flat on the floor, your heels should be on the floor and your legs straight. Now either put your hands by your sides or cross your arms over your chest. Now slowly sit up. The first time you do this it is really tough, so you may want to do your sit ups with your knees bent at first. But doing them with your legs flat in a slow and controlled manor is a great way to help your core. To start with just do 1 set of ten reps and as you get stronger you can do more.
Exercise To Strengthen Core : Plank
This can be an awkward exercise to start with, but you will get the hang of it. Lay on your stomach on the floor then go onto your forearms and your toes. For thirty seconds I want you to stay in this position all the while tightening your abdominals, butt and leg muscles and hold it. After 30 seconds then relax, rest for a few seconds and then go again. Do this about five times. It may sound like you are not doing much, but trust me this is a great way to strengthen your core. After a while add more time to how long you stay in the plank position.
Exercise To Strengthen Core : The Arm Sweep
For this exercise you want to sit on your butt with your legs sticking out in front of you. You can either have your legs slightly bent at the knee or flat on the ground. Do what is most comfortable for you. Sit with your back up straight. Put your arms out to the sides and then slowly twist so that your left hand is touching your right foot. Your other arms should be going behind you and touching the ground. Repeat this for the other side in a slow and controlled motion. To start with do 1-2 sets of 8 reps and then build up from there.
Exercise To Strengthen Core : Superman (Back Extension)
There is no need to wear a cape or your underwear on the outside of your pants! The Superman is more commonly known as a back extension. Anyway to do this exercise you will need to lay on your front flat on the floor with your arms pointing forwards. The actual exercise sees you needing to lift your arms and legs slightly off the floor at the same time. The idea is that only your stomach should be touching the floor. Hold the exercise for 20-30 seconds and then relax. Rinse and repeat! As you get stronger you can add some extra seconds to this exercise.
