Going on vacation is great, but the days leading up to you actually leaving the house can be really hectic and crazy. You feel like you have a million things to get organized and no one seems to want to help! One year it got so crazy for me that I forgot my youngest son and he had to fight off burglars until I got home, or that may have been the plot for Home Alone. 😀 Anyway there are many things you need to do before you go on vacation so you can switch your mind off and just relax once you are there. Yes I know these are not exciting things, but before you can enjoy your vacation you need to get them out of the way.
Have A Packing Checklist
Packing is about as much fun as toothache and in my home if I left my husband and the boys to pack themselves then they would spend the whole vacation in the same pair of shorts and a basketball vest! This is not happening on my shift. While it’s not exciting, I write down a packing check list. Pants, shirts, shorts, socks, toiletries and anything else that we need to “survive” on vacation I write down and I then check off each item when I see it has been packed!
Pay Your Bills
For some odd reason my husband manually pays is cell phone bill each month. Well guess what he forgot to do once? And he had no service until we got back. No cell phone service in the grand scheme of things is not a big deal at all. But if you have any bills that are essential to your home like say a water bill, electricity bill or whatever, make sure they are taken care of before you go, so that when you come home you are not shocked when you have no water or electricity!
Get Rid Of Food That “Can Go Bad”
In my house the week before we go on vacation you can bet your bottom dollar that meals will be made using food we have in the freezer and especially the fridge. Anything that has the potential to go bad and stink the house out while we are away needs to be either eaten, thrown out or given to someone else. For the love of god do not leave a carton of milk in the fridge while you are away for two weeks!
Empty The Trash
Hey I said that this list would not be that exciting! Make sure all the garbage cans, bins or whatever you call them in your house have been emptied before you go. You do not want to come home from your vacation to a house that smells because you have not emptied your garbage in a few weeks! And when you have a ton of unpacking and washing to do, taking out the trash and spraying the house with air freshener is not something you want to have to mess with.
Get Someone To Check In On The House
You do not have to have a house sitter or anything like that. But if you have a friend or family member close by and they do not mind, then it will not hurt to ask them if they can pop in and check in your place and make sure things are ok. No leaking water, tripped breakers or things like that. Nothing will probably happen while you are away, but knowing you have a person checking in on your house can be a huge weight off your mind.
