I am not talking about working out so hard that you are throwing up! The gym is one of if not the most bacteria ridden place that you will go to in your daily life. Really the gym as much as I love it is a disgusting place and if you do not take the proper precautions then you can end up with all kinds of rashes, viruses and god knows what else. I hate being sick, absolutely hate it! And I figured that it must have been things I was catching at the gym which were responsible for the what seemed like 20 colds a year I would get. But I can spare you this pain by following these steps to keep other peoples germs at bay!
Wash Your Hands!
I see so many people when I am at the gym (not that I stand around spying on people or anything) who after they have finished their workout, grab their jacket and just leave! Are these people crazy? Your hands are not only covered in your own sweat, but all the sweat of the other people in the gym who have used the same things you have used! If they have something horrible on their hands then you have it. Before you leave the gym go into the bathroom and wash your hands with warm soapy water and leave all those germs there!
Have Your Own Stuff
Without giving my age away about let’s just say slightly more than ten years ago, I took part in a boxercise class at a gym near my house. I did not know I needed these boxing gloves for the class so I happily took the offer of using the ones the gym had. ewwww is all I have to say. I put my hands in them and felt the warm probably a million years old sweat that was still in them! Next time I went to boxercise I had my own cheap pair of gloves! This goes for everything at the gym. If you do a class and you need a yoga mat or something else then buy your own. The same goes for using the towels at the gym, take your own and do not use ones that the gym leaves out for you!
Heal Your Wounds
Many infections are caught through cracks or cuts in the skin. If you have a small cut somewhere then for the love of god put a small band aid on it! No matter if you think that its nearly healed just put a band aid on or even a bandage and save yourself the trouble of making yourself sick by catching something through your cut or other wound.
Look At Other People
No I am not saying stand around checking people out! But for example I saw a lovely gentleman get of an exercise bike, he wiped the machine down once he got off it, but I still used the other bike. The reason was that I say he had this rash on his arm. I may sound excessive here folks, but I am not risking catching any kind of rash! If people are coughing and spluttering all over the place then do not work out near them.
Wipe The Machines Down Twice
The gym I use has these paper towels that people can use to wipe down the machines after they have used them. I always take my own towel with me to the gym to wipe my face, but I use the paper towels to wipe down the machines before and after I use them. I have no idea if the person who used the machine before me wiped it down so I am not willing to take the chance so I wipe down before and after I have used them.
