While I love to play video games with my son, I do not want him to be a couch potato like I was, so I make sure that we exercise together. How To Get Kid Into Fitness : Sports Are Not Always The Answer
It can be easy to think that the best way to get your child to exercise is to force them to join a basketball, soccer or hockey club. The thing is not all kids like organized sports. Think of things like swimming, karate, skateboarding or other fun things. If your child is not enjoying the activity, then move on to something else. You do not want them to develop a hate for exercise because you are making them do a sport they do not enjoy.
How To Get Kid Into Fitness : Play With Your Kid
My son has no interest at all in joining his school basketball team, but he will shoot hoops with me in the drive way for well over an hour. This is a great way to not only bond with your child, but get them to do a little exercise as well. It does not have to be basketball or even a sport for that matter. Go on a walk with your kid, go for a swim, walk the dog or whatever. But if you are doing it with them then they will be more likely to stick with it more.

I have a weight bench and some dumbbells in the garage, it’s nothing fancy or expensive. But when I started to work out from home rather than go to the gym, my son took an interest and before long he was wanting to work out with me. It does not have to be just weights. Look at some fun workout DVDs. If you have a son I would recommend using something like Insanity or the P90X workout as these have loads of buff guys working out to inspire them.

You do not want to be shouting drop and give me 20 or being negative with them. If you are lifting weights and your kid is working hard, give them a high five or a pat on the back. If you are out for a walk and they are struggling, give them a little encouragement to help them get through it. Always be positive when it comes to exercise with your child. Never make exercise seem like a chore or something that is not fun.
How To Get Kid Into Fitness : Do Not Limit Screen Time
Yes, you read that right, I say do NOT limit the amount of time you let them watch TV, play video games and surf the internet. I say still let them enjoy those things, but make sure that when you say hey lets go for a walk or hey let’s play some baseball that they do it. By limiting their time in-front of the TV you may think you are getting them to want to play outside, but what you are most likely doing is making them resent exercise as its taking them away from what they love. There should be a portion of each day say 30-60 minutes where it’s time for some fun exercise. As long as my kids get at least 30 minutes per day of some sort of exercise then I do not harass them about how they spend their leisure time. But never make the mistake of telling them that they cannot watch TV because they need to exercise. You want them to enjoy exercising, not resent and hate it. You need to make exercise part of their daily life. It should be something that is just as natural as brushing their teeth or taking a shower.
