I am sure that the majority of you reading this have used EBay before to buy things. I had used EBay for years until I finally started to sell some stuff that was cluttering up the house. I decided to go the EBay route instead of having a garage sell or taking it to a thrift store. I even started to sell these little tissue boxes I made for a while as sort of a second income on EBay. With that being said I know there are many people who would like to start their own EBay store and today I want to share with you the pros and cons of selling things on EBay. .
Pro: You Can Reach More People
This works for if you have a bunch of junk you want to get rid of and if you are starting a small business selling stuff. Let’s say you have an old pair of roller blades and you put them out front of your house at a garage sale, you will get maybe what 50 people looking at them? Well with EBay people who want roller blades will type it in and find your stuff. If you are selling a vast amount of stuff then you can make some good money as there are literally millions of people who use EBay and who can see your things.
Con: EBay Take A Cut
EBay has seller fees and that is to be expected, I mean let’s face it they need to make money at the end of the day and they are working as a middle man. Still it can be annoying as hell when you sell a whole bunch of stuff and you see at the bottom how much of a cut they take. When you sell stuff privately you get all the proceeds. As well as EBay if you are using PayPal then there can also be the potential for PayPal fees as well which further eats into your profit. When you add into this shipping costs as well your let’s just say $100 sale all of a sudden can be as much as $20 short!
Pro: People Are Actually Looking For What You Are Selling
This one ties into our first pro. But when I go on EBay to buy something I know exactly what it is I am looking for and I type it into the search. If you are having a garage sale I highly doubt people leave the house in the morning hoping to score exactly what it is you are selling. The point I am trying to make here is that EBay puts you into contact with people who actually are interested in what it is you are selling.
Con: You Deal With Some Of The Worst People!
I would say the majority of experiences that I have had on EBay have been positive, both as a seller and a buyer. But oh my god there are those people who I just want to reach through my laptop screen and slap around the head. You will deal with some of the most awkward people, people who expect that item they bought for under a buck that you have said is not in mint condition, actually be in mint condition. You get people who do not read your product descriptions properly and then complain! People who try to rip you off by saying they sent an item or that they never received an item. There are many good people on EBay, but there are also some really nasty people as well!
