As proud as we are when our kids go to school for the first time it can also be a very scary event for us parents. Not just because we are worried about how our children will be at school without us there to look after them. But also because, now what on earth do we do? The change from having to look after your child 24/7 to having them at school all day can be a real eye opener to your own life and you come to terms with having to make good use of this free time. Here are a few things that you can do while your child is at school.
Chat To Other Parents At School
You are bound to meet a whole bunch of new people at the school gates each morning and afternoon. So try not to be too shy and strike up conversations with people. It’s a great way to see that you are not the only parent who has shipped their kid off to school.
Read A Book/Watch A Movie
Some people may make you feel guilty for this, but who the heck cares! You have spent the last few years reading children’s books, singing nursery rhymes watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. So if once your child starts school if reading a book you have never had the time to read with the kids around is what is going to take your mind of them being away from you then do it! Likewise watch that romantic movie you have always wanted to watch, but you could not during the day when you had the kids to watch. Take the time while they are at school to enjoy a couple hours and do what you want to do. And as hard as it is and trust me I am speaking from experience here! Try not to feel guilty about it, you have earned this time!
Meet With Friends
While meeting new friends at your kids school, meeting up with old friends and family members now will be easier than ever. I remember trying to meet for a coffee with friends when my son was 2 and it was a nightmare! We really could not chat and it was not that great, but now you can meet up and chat away without having to worry about entertaining a child! This is also a great way to get out of the house and keep your mind off your child.
Think About A Career
One thing I hated when my son started school was how everyone expected me to snap my fingers and just fall into a new job or a career. the real world for most of us does not work like that! But if there is a career that you think you would like to do in the future, maybe when you kids are a little older then try and see if you can train for it now. You will have many hours per day that you can dedicate to taking a college class or learn from home. Yes you will always have to be on call just in case on the extreme off chance you have to go into school, but now is a great time to at least think about what you want to do as far as work is concerned.
I hated fitting in working out around my son. Either I would have to wake up really early in the morning and do it. Or I would have to wait until my partner was home from work and go late at night. I know that many people workout like this and more power to you, but for me it just did not work out and I had zero motivation. Once my son started school though I really got into exercise. At first I started with just a few exercise DVD’s, but I eventually built up to joining my local gym.
