In my quest to reduce the size of the jeans I wear, to say that I read a ton of weight loss magazines, websites and pretty much anything under the sun that had something to do with weight loss. I was obsessed. And in the years since I started my weight loss journey, I have come across some pretty amusing, crazy and out there theories for people dropping a few pounds. Here are a few of my favorite and whether or not there is any truth in them.
Weird Theory No1 : Nightmares Make You Lose Weight
Waking up covered in sweat after a nightmare where Michael Myers is chasing you with a knife is not a bad thing. Apparently having a real good nightmare is a great way for a person to burn some bonus calories when they sleep!
Well this is not actually true, just because you wake up with your heart pounding at 100 mph this does not mean you have been burning calories, it just means you have had the heck scared out of you! The only way a nightmare can make you lose weight is if you are tossing and turning all night. And even then the weight loss you get will be marginal and nothing compared to how bad you will feel after a rough night’s sleep. So watching a scary movie just before bed may be fun, but any nightmares you get from it will just disturb your sleep and not make you lose weight.
Weird Theory No2 : I Can Take A Few Pounds Off The Scales As My Hair Is Heavy
One thing that some people seem to think effects the number on the scales in their hair. I really did go to a weight loss group with a lady who would demand that 3 pounds (yes, 3 pounds) be taken away from her weight due to her hair. She had like long blonde hair, but it’s not like she was Rapunzel.
At most your hair will weigh an ounce or two. Most scales do not even register in ounces! Have you ever picked up a wig? Well think of how light a wig is. Bottom line is your hair has nothing to do with the number you are reading on the scale! Even someone with hair like say a early to mid 1990’s Lenny Kravitz will not see their hair make a huge difference on the scale.
Weird Theory No3 : Only Eating Celery Will Give You A Super Model Body
Hmm, this one is kind of tough to talk about. You see there is an element of truth in this one. Some people like to call this “negative calories”, the idea here is that your body actually will burn more calories when eating and digesting the food than the amount of calories that the food itself contains. It’s a pretty insane theory, but it has been proven that when you are eating celery your body will use up more calories to deal with it than the celery contains. The problem is that living on celery is a pretty crazy way and not an actually very healthy way to live. Your body does need a certain amount of calories to live after all and by just eating celery you run the risk of making yourself feel really run down and you can possibly develop more serious health problems down the line!
